I think in the first season, a lot of the episodes sidetracked from the main storyline to create separate, 20-minute stories, so I could imagine you could skip certain episodes and show what's important (for the plot, character development, or the lore) in them in some other, shorter ways. Plus having some of the original creators on the team gives this legitimacy that the movie never had.
The new live-action series has a lot more potential for the sole facts that the damn thing isn't going to be condensed. The movie was a flawed product that went disastrously wrong, it should never have tried to cram a season's worth of story into one movie. When Aang and his friends go to a Fire Nation town so that Aang can witness some firebending, their plan soon goes awry when it’s discovered that he is the Avatar.
